Jose Mourinho faces an anxious wait to find out whether or not the Football Association will charge him for his furious reaction to the goading of Chelsea coach Marco Ianni.
Telegraph Sport understands referee Mike Dean is set to include the spat between Ianni and Manchester United manager Mourinho in his report, which the FA will study on Monday.
Mourinho had to be stopped from chasing Ianni down the Stamford Bridge tunnel after Chelsea’s second assistant coach wildly celebrated Ross Barkley’s stoppage-time equaliser in front of him.
Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri immediately apologised to Mourinho for the incident and Ianni was later sent to say sorry to the Portuguese himself.
But, despite Chelsea accepting their man was in the wrong, Mourinho must still wait to find out whether the FA decide to charge him, Ianni or both men with improper conduct.
Ianni could also face internal disciplinary action from Chelsea once the FA make their intentions clear.
Mourinho is already appealing against a charge of using ‘abusive, insulting or improper language’ after allegedly swearing at a television camera in Portuguese following United’s victory over Newcastle United before the international break.
Other than being goaded by Ianni, Mourinho was the subject of abusive chants from a section of the Chelsea crowd following the flash point and he responded by showing three fingers for each of the Premier League titles he won with the Blues.
Sarri has called on those responsible for singing ‘f--- off Mourinho’ to show more respect to the most successful manager in Chelsea’s history.
“Mourinho here has won and so I think that we need to respect him and to respect everybody who has won a trophy for the club,” said Sarri.
Sarri was not only upset with Ianni, but also annoyed by the way his team played in the second half after going in at the break ahead through Antonio Rudiger’s header.
Anthony Martial scored two second-half goals that looked destined to inflict Sarri’s first defeat as Chelsea head coach until substitute Barkley netted his first Stamford Bridge goal in the sixth minute of injury time.
“I thought we could win the game and for 60 minutes we were in complete control,” said Sarri. “But then suddenly after their goal, we lost control of the match because we stopped playing our football and we started to play another game of football with the long ball, the second ball and we are not used to playing this sort of football. We need to play short passes. So I have to study this match very well because we can learn a lot.”
The dramatic equaliser completed a memorable fortnight for Barkley, who had scored his first ever Chelsea goal in the victory away at Southampton and then played well in both of England’s Uefa Nations League games against Croatia and Spain.
“Getting in the England side and putting in two good positive performances there, and, today, with my first goal at Stamford Bridge was fantastic for me,” said Barkley.
Asked if the past two weeks had been the best of his career, the 24-year-old added: “Yeah I’d probably say so. I got a couple of goals and a couple of assists, and played well for England. It just shows that hard work does pay off in the end.”
Barkley has been working hard to add goals to his game, while at the same time completing the lengthy process of having all of his tattoos removed.
The former Everton man used to have tattoos covering his entire left arm, but now has no artwork left on his body after deciding he had grown out of them.

“I got them at a young age and sometimes when you are young you do stupid things and not think about it,” said Barkley. “But I went into it too quick and over the years I felt I wanted to get them removed, so I went through the process in the last couple of years.
“My first tattoo was when I was 14. I was a bit young. I was a big lad, so they didn’t question my age at the time. I started getting them removed a couple of years ago. But I would never rule out getting another, maybe when I have kids I might have something done to go with that. I don’t know.”
In an interview with Telegraph Sport in August, Barkley stated that he believed he could become a 20-goal-a-season midfielder and he is now beginning to see the results of all the extra practice he has put in on the training ground.
“We work on it a lot in training and in the last couple of games it has come off, I arrived at the right times,” said Barkley. “I believe that I will get goals, whether it is two yards out or thirty yards out, it does not matter, and it can make the difference.”
